At Alberta Carriage Supply, we’ve been selling good-quality forecarts – made by others – for over 20 years.
However, recently, there have been a series of challenges in the horse-farming industry:
- A weaker Canadian dollar
- A significant increase in freight costs
- A tariff on steel
These issues have made this staple piece of equipment more than $6,000 USD – an almost 30% increase from just 5 years ago.
When you’re using the forecart for everything from plowing your garden to snow removal to pleasure driving, you know how important it is to have this versatile piece of equipment in your lineup. But the increase in price has made it unaffordable for many. Until now.
Our Journey from customer to manufacturer
When we realized the prices weren’t coming down any time soon, we investigated a few options of how to get them for our customers.
We tried to get it manufactured offshore. Although they were built to our specifications, they weren’t up to our – and our customers’ – standards. While they were technically sound, the design lacked the horse knowledge and experience needed to create a useful and efficient product. Not to mention that the freight costs were still extremely high.
We researched local craftsmen and businesses, searching for a partner to help us build a suitable forecart. We had no real success.

So, we put our heads together and asked the question, “Why not make them ourselves?”
We made and test-drove a few prototypes. And then we refined it. Testing and retesting, and after having conversations with our teamsters, we made improvements to things like the fenders and the brakes.
And we’re happy to say we’re happy with the new forecart design. Happy enough to put our name on it – and our driving horses in front of it.
